Life before support

Vivek Pal was about twenty when he faced the loss of both parents. He was living with a physical disability, and his parents had been his main source of everyday support. Their deaths left a painful absence in his life and a practical gap in the care around him.

He needed help with tasks such as dressing, eating and moving. These were needs that returned throughout the day. Without the people who had supported him, managing those tasks became more difficult, while grief added to the sense of being alone.

Vivek was at a very different stage of life from the older people supported through our elder care work. He was a young adult trying to find a way forward after a major loss. His circumstances called for assistance that recognised both his disability and his age.

The support he needed involved practical help and guidance. Someone had to respond to immediate needs while also helping him engage with daily life again. Care required patience and attention to what he was able to do, what remained difficult and where assistance was needed.

How we helped

Dev Bhoomi Samiti offered Vivek daily living assistance and guidance. Our support helped him approach ordinary tasks with someone available to help, at a time when the loss of his parents had disrupted the care he depended on.

Encouragement was part of that process. The team supported him as he began to find his way through everyday activities again, recognising the importance of small steps. Attention was given to helping him participate in life at a pace suited to his circumstances.

The relationship also provided reassurance. Vivek had people willing to engage with him, respond to difficulties and help him keep moving forward. That presence mattered alongside assistance with the tasks themselves.

Our work with Vivek respected the fact that support and personal effort can go together. Receiving help gave him a way to take part in daily life, while guidance encouraged him to build on what he could manage. The aim was to support him as a young person with interests and possibilities of his own.

What changed

Vivek began to reconnect with everyday life through assistance and encouragement. Help was available after the loss of the people who had previously provided it, and the guidance he received gave him a way to approach the day in smaller, more manageable steps.

His confidence began to return as he took part in this process. Small achievements gained importance, offering reasons to keep trying and opportunities to recognise his own effort.

He continued to need support. The change centred on having people beside him and a path back into daily activities after bereavement. His experience shows how practical assistance can make room for participation without placing the whole burden on the person receiving care.

For Vivek, the help offered a new source of stability during a difficult transition. It allowed his story to move forward from loss towards renewed engagement with life, with guidance and human connection around him.
