Life before support

Suresh had spent much of his life doing physical work. Even when he was over seventy-six, he was still taking on manual labour to meet everyday expenses. Years of effort had taken a toll on his body, and the demands of working continued into old age.

He lived alone in a modest home. Earning, arranging necessities and managing the quieter hours of the day largely fell to him. There was little company around him, and the practical strain of daily life was accompanied by loneliness.

His circumstances were easy to miss from a distance. The fact that he continued working did not reveal how difficult it was to keep meeting his needs. It also gave little indication of the isolation waiting at home after the work was done.

When Dev Bhoomi Samiti learned about Suresh, the team found an older person trying to manage these pressures with limited support. Reaching him at home became a way to understand the situation and begin helping with the needs closest to his daily routine.

How we helped

Our first visit brought ration supplies to Suresh's home. Food assistance addressed an immediate concern and gave the team a practical way to respond to what he was facing. He could receive support without having to leave home to collect it.

Further visits followed. The team continued contact and brought essential supplies, building a relationship around the assistance. Suresh had people coming to see him and taking an interest in how he was managing.

The visits also created time to listen. They gave him opportunities to speak and to feel connected with people beyond the demands of work. For someone living alone, that contact became part of the value of the support.

The help was rooted in the circumstances the team had found: an older man still working, with basic needs to meet and little company at home. Rations helped with the material burden, while regular contact responded to the loneliness around it.

What changed

Suresh received food and essentials through a relationship that continued beyond the first delivery. Having the team return brought a sense that his needs were being remembered. The assistance became connected with familiar people and ongoing contact.

His confidence and sense of belonging improved as that relationship developed. The visits brought warmth into a life that had been largely solitary, and he began to feel that he mattered to others.

The practical change was equally important. Ration support reached the place where he lived, helping with one of the everyday concerns he had been trying to meet through continued labour. Support was now available alongside his own efforts.

Suresh's story shows what can grow from a first home visit. An initial response to the need for food became a continuing connection, bringing both useful supplies and companionship into an older person's daily life.
