Life before support

Mohan Singh Rawat was over seventy-five and still doing sanitation work. His working life continued at an age when physical effort had become harder. Sweeping and maintaining the streets remained part of his routine, even as age and fatigue weighed on him.

There was little dependable family support around him. Alongside the effort of earning a living, he faced the need to arrange food and other basic necessities without someone close to share those responsibilities. The end of a working day could also mean returning to loneliness.

His circumstances show how continuing to work and needing assistance can exist together. Work remained part of his life, but it did not remove the difficulties of old age or provide the companionship he was missing. Both the practical and personal sides of his situation needed attention.

For Mohan Singh Rawat, support had to begin with recognition of the effort he was already making. He had spent years working and was still trying to meet his needs. Assistance could ease part of that burden while acknowledging his experience and dignity.

How we helped

Dev Bhoomi Samiti became aware of Mohan Singh Rawat's circumstances and stepped in with help for food and basic needs. Our team's support addressed the everyday concerns that remained difficult despite his continuing work.

Food assistance gave him help with something essential to each day. It was offered in response to his situation as an older worker with little family support, rather than on the assumption that working meant he could manage everything alone.

The team also brought personal contact into a life marked by solitude. Being noticed, listened to and treated with concern helped him feel that his difficulties mattered to others. The relationship around the assistance became a source of comfort.

Our work with him connected material help with respect for the person receiving it. His identity included years of labour and contribution to his surroundings. Offering support meant responding to his present needs while recognising that wider life.

What changed

Mohan Singh Rawat gained support with food and basic necessities, together with contact with people who took an interest in his wellbeing. Those additions helped make his daily circumstances less lonely and gave him assistance with concerns he had been carrying by himself.

The change was practical and personal. Food support helped with everyday needs; attention from the team offered reassurance that he was seen and valued. The combination brought a measure of comfort alongside the demands of his working life.

His experience draws attention to older people who continue to work while lacking care at home. Mohan Singh Rawat's effort to support himself remained important, and help from the Samiti gave him another source of support around that effort.

The heart of his story is this recognition: a lifetime of work does not make the need for care disappear. Receiving assistance and companionship helped him face daily life with less of that burden resting on him alone.
