Dignity First: Supporting Elders Affected by Leprosy

Care includes respect and belonging
Older adults affected by leprosy may need help with health appointments, daily needs, mobility, or social connection. The first step is to ask what the person wants and involve them in decisions. Respectful care protects privacy, uses a person's preferred name, and avoids defining them only by a diagnosis.
Families and neighbours can help by checking whether the person can reach health services, has warm clothing and meals, and can take part in community life. If support is needed, coordinate with qualified health workers and trusted local organisations. Never share someone's personal story or photograph without their permission.
Dev Bhoomi Samiti describes elder care as including food, medical care, shelter, warmth, and emotional support. Its elder care program reflects a simple principle: older people deserve safety, companionship, and dignity. Compassionate support is strongest when it protects a person's choices as well as their needs.
